2015 Apr 30 Moving to Temari #3 Part 1

Temari #3. Kiku Herringbone Beginner Temari Part 1

I have joined the group online and now I am ready to join the KIKU HERRINGBONE Beginner Temari.  Our first Temari in this challenge is very easy as compared to the 2nd part.

Part 1 we have learned how to begin the base of the Temari ball but using one of several choices.  I chose to use a 3" styrofoam center.  Then came the wrap around the center using some left over knitting worsted thread.  When the size we needed had been reached, then came wrapping and wrapping using thread, I chose black.  According to the instructions, then next step brought out our very pretty choice of crochet cotton. I chose a pretty white semi-medium thread that was wrapped so beautifully with a rainbow-colour of metallic thread.
My final wrap brought the mari to a 25cm size.  Was request to work on a 23 cm but Instruction told me this is just a fine size will expand the pattern a bit larger.

Part 1:  This is a C8 guideline division so that the pattern could be easily worked.
I have used a bright pink crochet cotton so that it will stand out beautifully in contrast from the Petal Layers

Layer 1: I chose to use a very thing thread on a skein from a friend (Jean Cuk) in my online group.  This thread I found to be very thin for this size of Temari.  It would be much nicer on a smaller Mari.
Layer 2:  I chose to use some beautifully hand=dyed thread from my friend Kalia Calhoun in Richmond, Va.   I met her also in this same group.  We actually became great friends and Temari sharers.

To finish this ball I made an OBI by circling the ball 5 rounds on one side of the Equator (bright pink) then repeating 5 rounds on the other side.
To complete this OBI, I wrapped the variegated (purple, blue, pink) dyed thread a further 5 rounds on each side.
To  tie these colours together and come back to the C8 guidelines, I went around the ball forming an "X" between the outline guide lines around the mari from the beginning shaping.

My found treasure for displaying my Temari work Aug 23, 2017

My Found Treasure     So here I am with an update on my developing Temari work.  Very discouraged indeed,,, and why you ask?  It is the learning curve that has me floating around in mid-air with no place to plant my feet. Will I let this stop me? Not in a million years, however, I think I will stop, learn and proceed a bit slower. One thing I have been thinking about though is a lovely display tray.  I have looked, drooled, dreamed and waited.  Lou and I spied a beautiful hand blown tray that was made from glass and it just sparkled with an almost golden dust.  Think of the colours pink bands with pink dust fading into bands of golden dust sparkles.  I think you get the picture.  When I saw the price tag ($115) on this beauty, I just let the dream go "poof" in my mind.  I decided then and there I did not want the holder to outshine my Temari work, which it would,  or IF, at this time my Temari did not cover over all this...

2015 March 15 #1 and 2 Temari

2015 March 15  Beginning Kiku Herringbone Temari Parts 1 and 2 Beautiful Temari, challenge to me during the spring coldness.   I have really begun to enjoy this beautiful art form.  I hope to grow from here. 2017 April 30, and now I write about the fun I had with this project. #1 is approx 23 cm and was wrapped around a medium sized styrofoam ball, then covered round and round with more knitting worsted thread. Bringing me to the place of decorating in a beautiful Mint Green and Baby pink for my two C8 colour choices.  I finished this smaller Mari in the allotted time to start on #2 with the group......... Now I can finish the story of Temari #2 using a C16 bright red crochet cotton was used to complete the guideline pattern.  I wrapped this styrofoam ball (large size) starting finishing at 33cm.  My material choice with this mari was to wrap round and round, layer upon layer using a fancy knitting type of wool.  It has little squares of colour...

2017 Sept 10 ..... Temari #7 Interlocking Spindles

Temari #7 Interlocking Spindles Here it is the end of September and I have not attempted, even remotely, to work on any Temari. I have found myself in a sticky situation......I could not understand or figure out the latest Temari being worked on in our Temari Beginner's group.  I, therefore, went on a search to purchase two handbooks.  That in itself is a different story so I will pass on that pleasure (sarcastic lip curl needed here) and carry on with my story. One of the group members has offered me the purchase of a duplicate book she had for her students.  I took her offer quickly.  Now I am going to work using Barb Suess book titled “Japanese Temari”.  In the first few pages, I found one answer to my problem.  I am left-handed, and it appears we have our own style to work stitches......yes, backward to everyone. With this book in hand complete with directions and diagrams, I started to work on my seventh piece of artwork.  This one is ti...
